FRESHWATER SPONGES

Freshwater sponges are a fascinating group of organisms found throughout lakes and streams globally. Like their marine relatives, they filter large amounts of water and also host diverse microbial communities. In collaboration with the Reich Lab and Maresca Lab at SUNY ESF, we are studying freshwater sponge distribution and diversity in New York waters to evaluate their potential as bioindicators water quality for the region.
